The Ogun State Government has swung into action to guarantee uninterrupted healthcare services for its citizens, particularly those living with HIV/AIDS. This move follows the 90-day suspension of funding support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, the Federal and State Governments are committed to ensuring that the withdrawal of support from USAID does not create a vacuum in healthcare services, stating that the Ogun State Government has implemented several measures to ensure continuity of care.
She said; these measures include ensuring the availability of HIV test kits across hospitals and healthcare centers, providing free HIV testing for all citizens, and maintaining treatment facilities to support ongoing drug pick-up and the initiation of antiretroviral medications (ARVs) for newly diagnosed patients.
Also the commissioner noted that the State Government has made arrangements to ensure that HIV-exposed infants have access to the Early Infant Diagnosis test at designated laboratories.
Additionally, logistical support for sample transport and viral load testing will be provided to ensure that all eligible patients receive necessary care, she promised.
To facilitate the provision of HIV services during this critical period, the Ogun State Government will engage existing mentor mothers alongside Government staff. The state Ministry of Health will oversee and coordinate ART sites to ensure a seamless range of care.
The Ogun State Government has also established mechanisms for feedback from healthcare workers in the field, allowing for weekly assessments of the situation and timely resolution of any challenges that may arise during the suspension period.
Dr. Coker urged citizens to remain calm and support the government’s efforts towards continuous service delivery and called on healthcare providers to support the government in integrating the treatment of HIV into general health services.
The Commissioner reiterated the Ogun State Government’s commitment to prioritizing public health and ensuring that no citizen is left behind in the fight against HIV/AIDS, despite the temporary challenges posed by the USAID funding suspension.
