The Nigerian Army has reported a minor explosion and fire outbreak in the early hours of Thursday at Ilese Barracks, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
Army spokesperson, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, said in a statement that no lives were lost in the incident, which occurred within a storage facility of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron.
According to Anele, the explosion triggered a small fire, but quick action by troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, working alongside the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, brought the situation under control.
Damage was limited to the affected building and some stored materials, with no injuries recorded. A detailed assessment is ongoing to determine the extent of material loss.
Anele assured residents of Ilese and surrounding communities that there was no cause for alarm, adding that the Army has launched a full investigation to ascertain the cause and prevent future occurrences.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to the safety of its personnel and neighbouring communities,” she said.
