Tinubu Leaves Japan, Heads to Brazil for State Visit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has wrapped up the Japan leg of his two-nation tour and is now en route to Brazil, where he begins a state visit on August 24.

Tinubu departed Yokohama late Thursday night, embarking on the ultra-long-haul journey that will include a stopover in Los Angeles before his delegation touches down in Brasília, Brazil’s capital.

From Abuja to Yokohama

The President’s international trip began on August 15, when he left Abuja with his entourage. Their first stop was Dubai, UAE, before arriving in Yokohama on August 18.

In Japan, Tinubu attended the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), taking part in the opening ceremony and plenary. He also held bilateral meetings with world leaders, culminating in an interactive session with Nigerians in the Diaspora on Thursday night.

Turning Toward Brazil

With Japan behind him, Tinubu now shifts focus to Brazil—South America’s largest economy and a long-time partner of Nigeria. Officials say the visit will go beyond diplomacy, aiming to open new chapters in trade, energy, and cultural exchange.

The trip is being described by aides as part of Tinubu’s broader effort to reposition Nigeria as a key player not just in Africa, but in global south alliances.

🔹 What’s on Tinubu’s Brazil Agenda?

  1. Trade & Investment — boosting bilateral trade and creating channels for Nigerian exports.

  2. Energy Cooperation — discussions on oil, gas, and renewable energy partnerships.

  3. Agriculture & Technology — exploring knowledge exchange in agribusiness and tech innovation.

  4. Cultural Diplomacy — strengthening ties through cultural, educational, and sports collaborations.

  5. Global South Partnerships — deepening Nigeria’s voice in south-south cooperation platforms.
