Tinubu Pledges Swift Action on Nigeria-Colombia Agreements

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to fast-tracking the implementation of bilateral agreements with Colombia, saying the evolving global landscape demands stronger international partnerships in trade, politics, and culture.

Speaking on Monday at the State House, Abuja, during a high-level meeting with Colombia’s Vice President, Francia Márquez, President Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria is ready to replicate existing agreements with Brazil—particularly in aviation and consular matters—with Colombia.

“Our business opportunities with Colombia have already been enhanced,” Tinubu said. “I support every aspect agreed upon by the delegation. What we did with Brazil in aviation and diplomacy, we can do with Colombia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will move swiftly on this.”

The Colombian delegation, which included senior government, business, and diplomatic officials, was welcomed as part of a broader effort to deepen ties between Africa and Latin America.

President Tinubu also encouraged Colombian investors to explore opportunities in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, agriculture, and broader economy, noting that the country’s youthful population offers both a skilled workforce and a strong consumer base.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who oversaw bilateral talks prior to the visit, described Márquez’s visit as a chance to revive long-dormant ancestral and cultural ties.

“This visit reconnects us with shared histories that were disrupted by slavery and colonialism,” Shettima said, noting political and cultural similarities that can fuel economic partnerships.

Vice President Márquez, Colombia’s first Black vice president, said the visit to Nigeria was deeply symbolic and significant.

“Coming to the land of our ancestors is emotional and historic. We are here to build a long-term partnership based on shared heritage, social justice, and inclusive growth,” she stated.

She also emphasized Colombia’s interest in launching direct flights between both countries, as well as promoting cultural exchanges, political consultations, and trade.

“Nigeria’s leadership in Africa, and the African Union’s work on restoration and reparation, aligns with Colombia’s goals in building bridges across the African diaspora,” Márquez added.

The high-level meeting was attended by key members of President Tinubu’s cabinet, including:

• Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila

• Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Maitama Tuggar

• Coordinating Minister of Finance and Economy Wale Edun

• Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr. Jumoke Oduwole

• Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim

The visit marks a renewed push toward a more connected Global South, as both countries explore opportunities rooted in cultural affinity and mutual economic benefit.
