One of the leading governorship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, has spoken on her recent visit to President Bola Tinubu at his Lagos residence.
The daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo met with Tinubu on Monday in Lagos, where she formally briefed him on her political ambition and plans for Ogun State.
Sources said the meeting centred on Obasanjo’s intention to contest the governorship of Ogun State.
Speaking on Saturday in Abeokuta during “Media Parliament”, an interactive programme organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, she said she had a good discussion with the President, although she described the visit as a private one.
“The visit to the president was a private visit. We talked. He was very gracious. We spoke—very sharp and articulate—and we had a very good discussion,” Obasanjo said.
The former senator dismissed speculation that she is in the governorship race to bargain for a deputy governorship or a ministerial slot.
“I am not interested in being a deputy governor. If I came into this race to be governor, I do not believe that… I would just say no. I’m not in this race for deputy governor. I’m not in it for a minister.
“I like the life I live. If I don’t get it, I’ll continue to participate in the politics of the party, but I will go back to my job, which I still have,” she said.
The former commissioner for health insisted that, unlike other politicians, she has a good job she can always fall back on.
“As I’m sitting in front of you, I have a job, and that job is teaching. For the last three years, I’ve been teaching online because that is what technology allowed us to do during COVID. I have a good job,” Obasanjo said.
Responding to questions on her financial capability for the election, she said she has no billions to spend but relies on the goodwill of the people.
“I haven’t spent billions, and I’m not—I don’t have billions to spend. The other is the goodwill of the people.
“I have people donating their time, their resources—anything they have. I have people donating T-shirts, people donating caps, people donating anything. That is just part of the goodwill that has arisen from being a commissioner and a senator,” she said.
