A total of 160 secondary school students and adults in Yewa North Local Government Area (YNLG) have successfully completed a three-week intensive skill acquisition training programme designed to curb unemployment and foster self-reliance among young people in Ogun State.
The initiative, organised by the Yewa North Local Government Council, provided participants with hands-on training in a variety of vocational trades including catering and decoration, beaded bag making, souvenir bag production, and adire (tie and dye), among others.
At the closing ceremony, Chairman of the Council, Dr. Olusola Akinbode, said the programme was deliberately scheduled during the long vacation to keep youths meaningfully engaged while equipping them with income-generating skills.
“This initiative was designed to empower both students and adults so they can contribute positively to their families and communities. Let me assure you that the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration remains committed to youth development and will spare no cost in building the capacity of our teeming youths,” Dr. Akinbode said.
Other council leaders, including Vice Chairman Hon. Joseph Ilori, Secretary to the Local Government Alhaji Lukumon Akinyemi, Supervisors for Information, Youths and Social Welfare Hon. Segun Oladodu, and Education Alhaji Fatai Adekunbi, praised the programme’s impact and urged beneficiaries to sustain their newly acquired skills.
Similarly, Acting Head of Local Government Administration (HOLGA), Mr. Idowu Odeyemi, and Director of General Services and Administration (DGSA), Mrs. Anu Fatade, described the scheme as a strategic step towards reducing crime and creating employment opportunities in the state.
One of the adult trainees, Madam Florence Akinola, explained that the training covered four major areas of vocational development, stressing that the knowledge gained would go a long way in tackling poverty, crime, and joblessness.
The excitement was echoed by beneficiaries such as Miss Olanrewaju Sanumi (Catering and Decoration), Miss Aina Alice (Beaded Bags), and Miss Gloria Adelanwa (Souvenir Bags), who expressed gratitude to both the state government and the council for providing life-changing opportunities.
