The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and ValueJet Airlines have taken swift disciplinary action against crew members involved in a high-profile safety breach during an incident with legendary Fuji musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The confrontation occurred on August 5, 2025, during boarding for ValueJet Flight VK 201 to Lagos. According to FAAN, preliminary investigations revealed that the passenger—later identified as KWAM 1—attempted to board the aircraft with an unidentified liquid substance, which was later confirmed to be alcohol. This action directly violated aviation regulations, despite multiple warnings from Aviation Security (AVSEC) officers and the flight crew.
Tensions escalated when the passenger allegedly defied directives under Nigeria’s National Civil Aviation Security Programme (NCASP) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 17, which prohibit carrying liquid items over 100ml unless explicitly declared and medically justified. In a disturbing turn, the passenger reportedly splashed the substance on a security official and refused to comply with the Flight Captain’s instructions, delaying departure and prompting the closure of the aircraft door.
FAAN confirmed that the passenger was escorted off the plane by AVSEC operatives and later released following initial questioning. The agency has assured the public that no status or celebrity will shield anyone from compliance with aviation law.
In response, ValueJet acknowledged the breach and immediately grounded the crew involved pending an internal investigation. The airline reaffirmed its commitment to safety, regulatory adherence, and collaboration with the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
Further action came from the NCAA, which announced the suspension of the two ValueJet pilots connected to the incident. The agency described the safety violation as “serious and unacceptable,” reiterating that all aviation personnel are expected to uphold the highest professional and safety standards at all times.
FAAN emphasized that investigations are still underway and promised strict accountability. “Passenger safety and aviation security are non-negotiable. No individual—no matter how influential—will be allowed to compromise our national and international safety protocols,” the Authority stated.
This incident marks yet another moment where Nigeria’s aviation authorities have reinforced a zero-tolerance stance on safety violations in the face of growing pressure to maintain global compliance.
