Hon. Omolola Bakare commissions market, water facilities, and more in landmark development drive
When many lawmakers shy away from capital-heavy projects like building a health centre, Hon. Omolola Bakare — a trained nurse turned politician — embraced the challenge head-on. On Friday, the Chief Whip of the Ogun State House of Assembly and representative of Ijebu-Ode State Constituency unveiled a Primary Health Care Centre in Sabo Molode, alongside other transformative projects aimed at uplifting her community.
Bakare, joined by Speaker Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide and a host of dignitaries, toured Ijebu-Ode to commission facilities that will boost healthcare, commerce, and community life. At Itamapako, she also inaugurated a 40-unit open-stall market for farmers and traders, a public toilet facility at Oke-Aje Market, and borehole water projects at Ajegunle Ijada and Ojofa Street.
For Bakare, the health centre was personal;
“Even though building a health centre is one of the most challenging projects members of the House often run from, I picked it because of my disposition as a nurse. If I have to run more projects, I will still choose a health centre,” she said.
She explained to reporters that she left her nursing profession to serve the public as a politician — and would gladly return to the hospital ward if politics ended tomorrow.
At the health centre commissioning, Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, publicly thanked Bakare for her determination, revealing that despite being unable to assist the project when approached for support, the lawmaker still pressed ahead and completed it.
Dr. Coker urged the community to make full use of the facility, assuring that it would be stocked with essential drugs and staffed by committed health workers. She encouraged residents to report any cases of worker absenteeism or shortages of medication so the centre remains effective.
Speaker Elemide praised Bakare as the first legislator from the last election cycle to invite colleagues for a project commissioning, saying her work deserved “genuine commendation.”
Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Hon. Damilare Alebiosu, described the projects as “lasting assets” that will serve the people and strengthen the developmental legacy of Governor Dapo Abiodun.
The Iyalaje of Ijebuland, Mrs. Alatishe, also used the occasion to advise market women and farmers to keep prices fair to attract customers. She appealed for a six-month grace period before traders in the new market are charged dues and urged for solar-powered lighting to allow trading into the evening.
Other dignitaries present included Minority Leader of the Assembly, Hon. Lukman Adeleye; Hon. Adegoke Awoso (Yewa North); Oba Osusanmi, the Aladeken of Oke-Ako; Rev’d. Dr. Dele Taiwo, Chairman of CAN Ijebu-Ode LG Chapter; The Bishop-Elect, Hon. Dr. Wasiu Olalekan Oluwatosin, CAN Chairman LCDA Chapter; as well as other traditional rulers, community leaders, and party faithful.
