The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially adopted the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a federal university. This move marks a significant milestone in the institution’s history, which was established by the Ogun State Government in 2005.
TASUED holds the distinguished position as Nigeria’s first specialized university of education. The institution was named after Dr. Tai Solarin, a revered activist and the founder of Mayflower School in Ikenne. Dr. Solarin dedicated his life to educating Nigerian children and imparting patriotic and leadership lessons.
As a federal institution, TASUED will be the first federally owned tertiary school in Ogun East senatorial district. This development is expected to bring about significant benefits to the institution, including increased funding and resources. The university’s well-developed infrastructure and academic programs require minimal federal investment for the transition.
President Tinubu approved the adoption on Friday, expressing gratitude to the Ogun State Government for inviting the Federal Government to take over the institution. This move is seen as a strategic step in the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing teacher education and instruction quality across all educational levels.
President Tinubu emphasized that TASUED’s transition into a Federal University of Education is an opportunity to honor Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the free education program in Western Nigeria. It also honors Dr. Tai Solarin, who spent most of his life educating Nigerian children.
The President also acknowledged the critical role played by the Awujale of Ijebuland in preventing the university’s closure in 2012, just seven years after its establishment. This recognition underscores the importance of community leaders in supporting education initiatives.
With TASUED’s new status, the Federal Government now oversees three education universities. The other two universities are Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo. This development is expected to strengthen the country’s education sector and produce high-quality teachers.
The adoption of TASUED as a federal university is a positive development for the institution, the state of Ogun, and the country as a whole.
