The Federal Government of Nigeria has clarified that Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) have not been scrapped. Instead, the government has proposed a 12-year compulsory education model within the existing 6-3-3 system.
The proposal, presented by the Honorable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, at the Extraordinary National Council on Education Meeting, aims to provide a seamless transition for students between JSS and SSS by eliminating the examination barrier ¹.
The proposed reform is still under consideration, and the Ministry will engage in extensive stakeholder consultations over the next eight months. The final decision will be made at the October 2025 National Council on Education Meeting.
