Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, emphasized the importance of responsible journalism during the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Ogun State Chapter’s monthly congress in Abeokuta yesterday. He cautioned journalists to avoid cybercrime pitfalls, including cyberbullying, cybersquatting, and property theft, while stressing the need for rigorous fact-checking before publishing.
Onasanya made this call in response to allegations of cyber-crime involving a journalist, during the decoration of Dr. Toyin Taiwo, Chief of Staff to the Governor, by the State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Abeokuta.
He advised them to embrace responsible journalism to avoid the distressing experiences that come with being arrested and prosecuted for avoidable offenses while performing their watchdog duties.
Describing the “Pillar of Good Governance” award conferred on Dr. Taiwo as proof of his dedication to good governance, strategic leadership, and quality support to the State administration, the HOS noted that the recognition was well-deserved and acknowledges Dr. Taiwo’s service and accountability in governance.
“This recognition from the media, the watchdog of society, speaks volumes about Dr. Taiwo’s significant role and credibility in Ogun State’s governance structure. The media, as the mirror of society, does not bestow accolades lightly; rather, it recognizes those who have genuinely distinguished themselves through their actions and impact.
Dr. Taiwo’s leadership and administrative acumen have been evident in his various roles within the Ogun State Government, including his tenure as Commissioner for Culture and Tourism and later as Deputy Chief of Staff. His elevation to Chief of Staff has further reinforced his reputation as a diligent, strategic, and highly competent public servant,” Onasanya said.
He congratulated the awardee, urging him to use the recognition as motivation to continue contributing his experience to the advancement of governance and the State’s progress.
He also commended the NUJ for its noble initiative in recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to governance and society and charged journalists to maintain professionalism, responsibility, and constructive criticism while making objectivity their guiding principle, emphasizing that a well-informed society is crucial to national development.
Describing the awardee as a dynamic, energetic, dedicated, and exemplary public servant, perfectly suited for the recognition the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mrs. Ronke Tokunbo-Peters; renowned lecturer, Prof. Jendele Hungbo; Director-General of the Office of the PPP, Mr. Dapo Oduwole; and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mr. Waheed Adesina, congratulated Dr. Toyin Taiwo on his honor in their separate goodwill messages.
Represented by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, Dr. Toyin Taiwo expressed gratitude to the NUJ for the honor, dedicating the award to the people of Ogun State, who continue to inspire him to do more.
Moreover, the Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Wale Olarewaju, stated that the choice of Dr. Taiwo was based on his effective leadership and his dedication to promoting the socio-economic well-being of the State.
