Pa Ayo Adebanjo was a renowned Nigerian politician and leader of the Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization. Born on April 10, 1928, in Ijebu Ogbu Oke, Ogun State, he hailed from a family of modest means, with his parents being Salawatu Anomo Adebanjo and Chief Joel Adebanjo.
Adebanjo’s early life and education shaped his future in politics. He attended the prestigious CMS Grammar School in Lagos and later became a distinguished lawyer. His entry into politics was marked by his role as the organizing secretary of the Action Group, a prominent political party in Nigeria’s First Republic.
One of Adebanjo’s most significant contributions to Nigerian politics was his unwavering commitment to democracy, justice, and national unity. As a leader of the Afenifere, he played a crucial role in promoting the interests of the Yoruba people and advocating for a more equitable and just society.

Adebanjo was also a key figure in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a pro-democracy group that fought against the military regime of General Sani Abacha in the 1990s. NADECO’s efforts ultimately contributed to the restoration of democracy in Nigeria in 1999.
As a member of NADECO, Adebanjo worked closely with other prominent Nigerians, including Chief Anthony Enahoro, Chief Abraham Adesanya, and Professor Wole Soyinka, to mobilize international support for the pro-democracy movement in Nigeria. He was a vocal critic of the Abacha regime and its human rights abuses, and he played a key role in organizing protests and rallies against the government.
Throughout his career, Adebanjo worked closely with other prominent Nigerian politicians, including Pa Onasanya and Chief Reuben Fasoranti, to advance the Afenifere agenda. He was also a strong critic of authoritarian regimes and a vocal advocate for human rights and the rule of law.
Adebanjo’s impact on Nigerian politics and development extends beyond his own region. He was a respected national leader who inspired generations of politicians and activists. His legacy continues to shape Nigeria’s political landscape, with many leaders, including president Tinubu even though his thoughts varied during the 2023 election, when he affirmed that the passion Nigerians have for Peter Obi of Labour Party is incomparable to that of other candidates, stating that he was just thinking about the constitutionality, logicality and equity of the situation of Nigerian politics from the time of independence. In a glowing tribute, President Tinubu described Adebanjo as a “strong advocate for democracy and justice” whose decades of unwavering struggle have left an “indelible mark” on Nigeria’s history.

Tinubu noted that Adebanjo’s “principled voice, which resonated through decades of political activism, will be deeply missed” and that his “regular interventions in national affairs enriched our political discourse”.
He also highlighted Adebanjo’s role in NADECO, where he was a leading voice against military dictatorship, helping to galvanize a movement that became the bedrock of Nigeria’s collective struggle to reclaim democratic governance.
The president stated that; “Baba Adebanjo stood among the last of a generation of nationalists and independent heroes who shaped the foundation of our country” and acknowledged his commitment as the intro to his governorship race in 1999 saying; “His unwavering commitment to truth and justice extended to my journey as a governorship candidate in 1999″.
He then comforted the nation saying; “Let us take solace in the enduring legacy of a man who dedicated his life to the service of others—a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come”.
In another development the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who also paid his respects to the late Pa Ayo Adebanjo described his passing as the “end of a glorious era” and praised him as a man of principle and one of the most prominent disciples of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. His tribute highlights the significant impact Adebanjo had on Nigerian politics and the Yoruba community.
In recognition of his remarkable life and achievements, Adebanjo received numerous accolades and awards. His passing on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96, was met with widespread tributes and condolences from across Nigeria and beyond.
