Tinubu Lands in Japan Ahead of TICAD9 Conference on Africa’s Future

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu touched down in Tokyo, Japan, in the early hours of Tuesday to attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9).

The summit, scheduled for August 20–22 at the Pacifico Yokohama, will bring together African leaders, international partners, and key stakeholders to explore innovative pathways for Africa’s development.

Tinubu’s flight landed at Haneda International Airport at 12:50 a.m. local time, where he was received by Ambassador Hideo Matsubara—Japan’s envoy in charge of TICAD at Haneda—alongside Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and other officials of the Nigerian Embassy.

Launched by the Japanese government, TICAD is a triennial event co-hosted with the United Nations, UNDP, the African Union Commission, and the World Bank. The conference alternates between Japan and Africa, with Tunisia hosting the last edition in 2022.

This year’s summit, themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” will spotlight Africa’s economic transformation, business reforms, and institutional strengthening through private investment and innovation. It will also address resilience, human security, peace, and stability across the continent.

While in Japan, President Tinubu is expected to hold bilateral talks and engage with top executives of leading Japanese firms with investments in Nigeria.
