In a dramatic finale during the 2023 CAF African Cup of Nations, the host nation, Ivory Coast, emerged triumphant, securing a 2-1 victory over Nigeria’s formidable Super Eagles.

The match unfolded with intense anticipation as Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller showcased their prowess, effectively overturning Troost-Ekong’s early goal.

Ivory Coast’s relentless pursuit paid off, clinching the AFCON trophy in a nail-biting encounter.

During the first half, Ivory Coast commanded possession, launching six attempts on goal, half of which found their mark.

Simon Adingra missed a golden opportunity to score in the 8th minute, sending his shot over the crossbar.

The tension escalated when Franck Kessie sought medical attention, casting uncertainty over his ability to continue.

Max Gradel’s 14th-minute corner was skillfully defended by the Nigerian side, while Victor Osimhen’s 27th-minute foul earned Coach Jose Peseiro a yellow card.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili’s heroics in the 34th minute denied Simon Adingra’s attempt, prompting a corner.

Nigeria’s captain, William Troost-Ekong, soared above an Ivorian defender seven minutes before halftime, nodding the ball into the top-left corner.

Seko Fofana’s long-range attempt in added time was deftly saved by Nwabili, ensuring a 1-1 scoreline at the break.

However, Ivory Coast’s resilience prevailed. Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller’s decisive strikes secured their nation’s victory, leaving Nigeria to grapple with the harsh reality of economic challenges amidst the sporting fervor.
