Two friends, Oluwashina Adenle Wakeel and Yusuf Adewale, were sentenced to seven years imprisonment each by an Osun State High Court for attacking a man, Abdul Salam Jubril Oyewale, with a stick, resulting in the loss of his right eye.
The convicts were arraigned on a seven-count charge, including conspiracy, attempted murder, and assault occasioning harm.
The charges were brought under different sections of the criminal code.
During the trial, the victim recounted the incident, which occurred in September 2022.
He stated that he was riding a motorcycle with one Usman Abdulbasit when a black Toyota Corolla overtook them.
The occupants of the Toyota Corolla, including the convicts, got out of the vehicle and attacked the victim. They removed the key from his motorcycle and beat him up, inserting a stick into his right eye.
The victim suffered severe injuries, including blood gushing out of his eye and all over his body.
He was taken to different hospitals for treatment, including Minaret Hospital Osogbo, University College Hospital Ibadan, and Eye Foundation Hospital Lagos.
Despite efforts to save his eye, the victim was eventually told that nothing could be done to salvage it. The retina had been detached from behind and could not be operated upon.
The court found the convicts guilty, with the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary for the state, Morufat Bello, and a Chief State Counsel, Adekunle Adeniyi, proving their case beyond reasonable doubt.
The convicts’ counsel, Ayodele Laogun, pleaded for leniency, citing their status as first-time offenders with dependent families. However, Justice Kudirat Akano sentenced the convicts to seven years imprisonment for conspiracy.
In addition to the seven-year sentence for conspiracy, the convicts were also sentenced to three years for assault occasioning harm, one year for assault, and one month for breach of peace. The sentences will run concurrently.
