The Ogun State Government has taken a significant step towards enhancing the quality of education in the state by distributing 750 computer laptops to STEM teachers. This initiative aims to ensure the effective and efficient use of technological innovations in imparting knowledge to learners.
According to Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, the laptops are part of the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration’s plan to provide one laptop per teacher. This plan is targeted at enhancing the teaching and learning experience in classrooms.
Prof. Arigbabu revealed that the present administration has trained over 200 teachers on IC3 and MCE digital literacy with certification. Additionally, 750 STEM teachers have been trained on PSI-PMI teaching methodology. The laptops are intended to equip these trained teachers with the necessary digital tools to foster excellent teaching and learning.
The Commissioner hinted that the Ministry would be lining up sessions to enable the trained teachers to cascade their knowledge to others. He emphasized that digital literacy would soon become a major criterion for employment as a teacher in the state.
Prof. Arigbabu stressed that the laptops are government property, and the trained teachers are merely custodians. He noted that the state has made significant progress in digitization, and teachers who are not digitally literate may struggle to fit in.
In her welcome address, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko, encouraged teachers to view the laptop distribution as an opportunity for self-improvement. She emphasized the importance of cascading knowledge gained to others for efficiency and productivity.
Permanent Secretary, Teaching Service Commission, Mrs. Melutia Ogunremi, announced that the Commission would begin training and retraining teachers, Vice Principals, and Principals to enhance their output. She advised the beneficiaries of the laptops to use them to improve their ICT skills and knowledge.
The Project Manager Skills Development, OGSTEP, Mr. Fatai Osunsanya, confirmed that the laptops were presented to teachers to boost their capacity building. He noted that the laptops would remain in the schools even when the teachers are transferred or retired.
Two beneficiaries of the laptop distribution, ICT teachers Mr. Adekunle Adelabu and Mrs. Omolayo Omotayo, expressed their gratitude to the government for keeping its promise. They pledged to transfer the knowledge gained to other teachers and learners.
The laptop distribution is a significant investment in the education sector, and it is expected to have a positive impact on the quality of education in Ogun State.
