The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has recorded a significant milestone in members’ welfare and professional development with the commissioning of a free Wi-Fi facility at its secretariat.

The facility was donated and inaugurated on Monday by philanthropist and community leader, Chief Olalekan Gbenga Oso, as part of efforts to enhance professionalism and improve internet accessibility for journalists across the state.

Speaking at the event, Chief Oso noted that the initiative was designed to strengthen journalism practice in Ogun State by providing reporters with seamless access to online resources, research materials, and digital platforms essential to modern media practice.

He added that empowering journalists remains critical to societal growth and democratic development, pledging sustained support for the union.

The donor, who holds the traditional title of Asiwaju of Owu Akinale and Asiwaju Bobaselu of Awori Ota, described the Wi-Fi project as a modest contribution to the advancement of journalism. He assured the council of continued partnership, emphasizing his commitment to giving back to the profession.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Ogun NUJ, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju, described Chief Oso as a dependable ally of the media, commending the gesture as both timely and historic. He recalled that Nigeria’s first newspaper was established in Abeokuta, noting that any meaningful investment in journalism within the state contributes to a lasting legacy.

Olanrewaju further disclosed that the initiative marks the first time in the history of the council that members will enjoy free internet access at the secretariat. He expressed deep appreciation to the donor and conveyed optimism that the development would further strengthen the cordial relationship between Chief Oso and the NUJ.

The gesture is also in commemoration of his 50th birthday celebration, scheduled for today (Tuesday, April 28, 2026).
