We need your help in protecting critical infrastructure, national security- NSCDC to journalists

As Nigeria continues to confront evolving internal security threats and pipeline vandalism, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) have called for an institutionalized national media-security framework to protect critical infrastructure and boost public trust nationwide.

The strategic alignment was highlighted during a high-level engagement between the NSCDC Ogun State Command and executive members of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel at the Command Headquarters in Owu-Dekudu, Abeokuta, Friday

Speaking on the imperative of media-security synergy, the State Commandant, Commandant (Dr.) Remilekun Omolade Ekundayo, described the press as an indispensable pillar in Nigeria’s national development architecture and overall security governance.

Commandant Ekundayo noted that effective national security management in contemporary Nigeria extends beyond tactical operations to include strategic public communication, civic engagement, and verified intelligence sharing.

She emphasized that safeguarding critical national assets such as petroleum pipelines, telecommunications infrastructure, power grids, and public utilities requires active public cooperation, which can only be achieved through responsible media reportage.

According to the State Commandant, national security agencies across the federation must build structured partnerships with journalists to combat misinformation, stem public panic during emergencies, and uphold operational integrity.

To ensure seamless coordination and verified information flow, Commandant Ekundayo directed that the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Sulaimon Folorunso, maintain open operational lines with national correspondents stationed in the state.

She added that while law enforcement agencies must remain committed to transparency, media practitioners must equally balance the right to information with operational confidentiality and national stability.

Responding on behalf of the media delegation, the Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Yetunde Fatungase, underscored the commitment of national correspondents to ethical journalism and patriotic engagement.

Fatungase acknowledged the statutory role of the NSCDC in internal security, private guard regulation, and civil protection, reaffirming that the press remains ready to support national stability through objective reporting.

She stressed that institutional collaboration between security agencies and news organizations is vital to fostering public confidence and bridging communication gaps between the populace and law enforcement.

The engagement concluded with a joint commitment by both institutions to forge closer nationwide synergy in public enlightenment, infrastructure protection, and community-driven security advocacy.
