The hard-fought battle culminated in a dramatic penalty shootout, with Nigeria prevailing 4-2.

The match, held on Wednesday, initially ended in a 1-1 draw, both goals secured through penalty kicks—Nigeria’s Ekong and South Africa’s Mokoena showcasing nerves of steel.

As the clock ticked into extra time, both teams demonstrated unwavering determination, weaving intricate plays that left spectators on the edge of their seats.

Despite scorching heat and mounting pressure, neither side managed to break the deadlock, setting the stage for a nail-biting penalty shootout.

Terem Moffi kick-started the shootout by confidently converting Nigeria’s first penalty. Omeruo followed suit, extending Nigeria’s lead.

Then came Nwabali, the hero of the moment, brilliantly saving South Africa’s third penalty, maintaining Nigeria’s advantage.

The tension escalated when Aina stumbled during Nigeria’s fourth penalty, offering South Africa a glimmer of hope.

However, their dreams were swiftly shattered as Mokoena missed his subsequent shot, handing Nigeria a decisive edge.
