Dodik Convicted: Bosnian-Serb Leader Faces Prison, Ban from Politics

Bosnian-Serb leader Milorad Dodik has been found guilty of defying the top envoy overseeing the peace process

Bosnian-Serb leader Milorad Dodik was recently sentenced to one year in prison and banned from holding public office for six years. However, Dodik seems unfazed by the verdict, calling it “nonsense” and telling his supporters in Banja Luka to “be cheerful.”

This conviction stems from Dodik’s disregard for the rulings of the international High Representative, Christian Schmidt. The high representative has the power to impose or annul laws and remove officials, including judges and political leaders.

The relationship between Dodik and Schmidt has been tense, with Dodik threatening to trigger the secession of the majority-Serb region, Republika Srpska. This has led to a series of laws aimed at withdrawing Republika Srpska from Bosnia’s national institutions, including the armed forces, judiciary, and tax system.

Despite his conviction, Dodik remains defiant, with his government proposing new legislation to withdraw from national institutions. However, Dodik faces additional challenges, including sanctions imposed by the US and UK due to corruption and connections with Russia.

According to Toby Vogel, co-founder of the Democratization Policy Council think tank, these sanctions may pose a greater threat to Dodik’s leadership than his recent conviction. Vogel notes that Dodik is “running out of cash to pay his bloated administration… and he can no longer raise money on international markets. So, he is in very deep trouble indeed.”
