Residents of Ibogun Community in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State have unanimously endorsed the candidacy of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Ogun Central, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo ahead of the 2027 general election.
The endorsement came during her familiarisation visit to Ward 11, where she was warmly received by traditional rulers, community leaders, market associations, artisans, youth groups, women organisations, as well as representatives of the Fulani and Hausa communities.
The well-attended gathering featured representatives of more than 30 groups, including market women and men, artisan associations, youth organisations and ethnic community leaders, all of whom openly declared their support for the PDP candidate, describing her as the best choice to represent Ogun Central in the Senate.
Leading the traditional council, the Olubogun of Ibogun, Oba Timothy Sowunmi, described Obasanjo as a tested and trusted leader with an impressive record of public service, assuring her of overwhelming support from the community.
Addressing the gathering, Obasanjo pledged to prioritise infrastructure development across the area if elected into the Senate.
She specifically promised to facilitate the rehabilitation of the major road linking Ibogun to neighbouring communities, stressing that the project would commence even before the election through her intervention.
According to her, improving road infrastructure would unlock the area’s agricultural potential, ease transportation challenges for farmers and traders, and stimulate economic growth across Ogun Central.
She maintained that the PDP has a proven record of delivering infrastructure projects while in government and vowed to sustain that legacy if given another opportunity to serve.
She further assured the residents that her office would remain open and accessible to the people.
“Agriculture remains the backbone of many communities here, but without good roads, our farmers cannot maximise the value of their hard work. My commitment is to ensure that these roads become motorable because development begins with accessibility.
“Representation is about impact, not occupying an office. My desire is to return to the Senate to ensure that our people enjoy the dividends of democracy through quality roads, better schools, improved healthcare and empowerment programmes.
“I believe leadership is about listening to the people. I will run an inclusive representation where every community has a voice and every constituency feels the presence of government,” she said.
Obasanjo also promised to sponsor people-oriented legislation capable of attracting more federal projects to Ogun Central while expanding empowerment initiatives for women, youths and small-scale entrepreneurs.
She said “Our young people deserve opportunities, not promises. Together, we will create an environment where they can thrive through skills development, enterprise support and employment opportunities.”
Speaking on behalf of the community, Oba Sowunmi praised the former senator’s previous tenure, describing her as a compassionate leader whose programmes positively impacted many lives.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the current representation of the district, insisting that the community had resolved to back Obasanjo overwhelmingly at the polls.
The monarch said “You have a track record as a former senator. Many people benefited from your representation, and countless families were lifted out of poverty through your interventions. That is why our people are excited about your return.
“Our current senator has fallen short of the expectations of the people. We hardly feel the impact of representation. What we seek is development, and we believe you possess the experience, capacity and commitment to deliver it. We assure you of massive votes from the Ibogun Community,” Oba Sowunmi declared.
