The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has recently proposed introducing blue cards in football.
Since the inception of yellow and red cards in 1970, football has adhered to this binary system for disciplinary actions.
Although, the new blue card proposal aims to add a fresh dimension to player sanctions, many have however come out and condemned the development.
Unlike the familiar yellow and red cards, the blue card will send a player to the sin bin for a ten-minute timeout.
It serves as a warning for dissent and cynical tackles, addressing increased incidents of arguing with match officials.
Reacting to this development, Managers like Chelsea’s Mauricio Pochettino and Tottenham’s Ange Postecoglou shared their thoughts.
According to footbal.london, Pochettino and Postecoglou expressed caution, questioning the need for complexity.
On Friday afternoon, Postecoglou said, “I struggle to understand why this urgency suddenly to bring in new things. I don’t know if there’s that much wrong with the game. My issue with the game right now is that VAR has changed football as an experience.
“I don’t know why a different colour card is going to make a difference. I don’t know about this taking things from other sports. Other sports are trying to make their games faster, we’re bringing in more clutter.”
Pochettino also said, “Difficult to express how I feel about the blue card. Difficult to explain. At the moment, we don’t have much information about that. That is going to create more debate. It is going to be more complicated. At the moment, my feeling now is it is not a good idea but we will see what happens.
“It’s going to be more complicated because the interpretation of the referee when to apply the red, the yellow or the blue. What happens with the goalkeeper? Do you play without the goalkeeper for 10 minutes or can you change? We will see.”
