In a stunning policy reversal, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has announced the withdrawal of criminal complaints against Ms. Comfort Emmanson and Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (KWAM 1) — just days after both were banned over unruly behaviour at Nigerian airports.
The decision — framed by the Minister as an act of “compassion” — includes lifting Ms. Emmanson’s lifetime flight ban, reducing KWAM 1’s sanction to one month, and even considering him for an airport security protocol ambassador role. Airline staff involved will also face a one-month license suspension, while a nationwide aviation security retreat has been ordered.
Keyamo insists the move was made after consultations, appeals from “well-meaning Nigerians,” and remorse shown by the offenders. “We take safety and security very seriously… but have decided to draw a line after these clemencies,” he said.
The Backlash
The announcement has lit up social media, with many Nigerians accusing the government of double standards and undermining the rule of law.
“One week ago, you slammed a ban. Now you’re lifting it? This isn’t justice, it’s a joke,” one commentator wrote.
“Why not also make Comfort an aviation ambassador — or better still, appoint a repentant kidnapper to mentor others in the business,” another remarked sarcastically.
Critics argue that by bypassing the legal process, the government has sent a dangerous message that fame and influence can trump accountability.
Some believe the offenders should have faced the full weight of the law, with presidential pardon considered only after due process.
As one frustrated observer put it:
“We’ve just added to our national shame. This is why we’re losing respect globally — even within Africa.”
For now, the clemency stands — but in the court of public opinion, the verdict on this decision is still very much up in the air.
