Tinubu Names Governing Council, Principal Officers for New Federal University in Ogoniland

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of the Pro-Chancellor, Governing Council members, and key principal officers for the Federal University of Environment and Technology, located in Koroma/Saakpenwa, Ogoniland, Rivers State.

At the helm of the newly established institution is Professor Don Mon Baridam, a respected academic from the South-South region, who will serve as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council. Prof. Baridam is a scholar in Management with expertise in Organizational Behaviour and previously taught at the University of Port Harcourt.

Also appointed is Professor Chinedu Mmom as Vice-Chancellor. Prof. Mmom, also from the South-South, is a professor of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Port Harcourt. He brings significant leadership experience to the role, having served as a former Commissioner for Education in Rivers State.

The Governing Council reflects Nigeria’s regional diversity and is composed of: Mr. Emmanuel Onoja – North Central, Mr. Hamid Adekunle – South West, Professor Chima Oji – South East and Alhaji Abdullahi Magaji Lamda – North West.

In addition to the Council appointments, President Tinubu also named a team of professional administrators to oversee the university’s internal operations:Registrar: Dr. Mpigi Monday Douglas (South-South), Bursar: Zoryii Josco Nwaimanie (North Central), Librarian: Dr. Saghanen Ntogo G. B. (South-South).

The Federal University of Environment and Technology was officially established following the signing of its founding bill by President Tinubu on February 3, 2025. The institution is set to commence academic activities and welcome its first cohort of students in September 2025.

This move underscores the Tinubu administration’s commitment to educational development, environmental innovation, and inclusion, particularly in the historically underrepresented Ogoni region.
