Man Pleads With Court: Wife Must Refund Bride Price or Return

NIGERIAN COURTS

In a heartfelt plea, Kaduna-based businessman, Haruna Adamu, has appealed to the Magajin Gari Shari’a Court to compel his estranged wife, Salamatu Abubakar, either to return to their matrimonial home or refund the bride price paid during their marriage.

Detailing the circumstances of their union, Adamu revealed he married Abubakar, a divorcee, but their eight-month marriage turned tumultuous, prompting her to relocate to her parents’ residence.

Despite sending financial support and foodstuff for the past six months, Adamu expressed, “I married her as a divorcee, and in the eight months of our marriage, I only enjoyed two months of peace. I love my wife, and I want her back.”

In response, Abubakar alleged physical abuse by Adamu and cited a lack of empathy towards her sick mother as reasons for leaving the matrimonial home.

She proposed refunding the N75,000 dowry instead of returning.

The presiding Judge, Malam Isiyaku Abdulrahman, however, adjourned the case to January 17, allowing Adamu to present a comprehensive list of claimed items and evidence of money spent on Abubakar.
