UNILAG Rape Trial: Defence Raises Credibility Questions as Complainant’s Cross-Examination Ends

Fresh questions emerged over the credibility of the complainant in the ongoing rape trial involving a lecturer of the University of Lagos, Dr. Samuel Obinna Ojogbo, as the defence successfully concluded its cross-examination before the Lagos High Court.

Lead defence counsel, Bidemi Ademola-Bello (SAN), formally closed the cross-examination after subjecting the complainant, Finyinfoluwa Owonifari, to extensive questioning aimed at testing the consistency and reliability of her allegations.

The defence maintained that several aspects of her testimony raised doubts requiring careful judicial scrutiny.

During the proceedings before Justice Ogala, one of the major highlights came when the defence confronted the complainant with forensic extracts obtained from her mobile phone. Particular attention was drawn to a contact identified as “Olive,” which appeared on the device with two heart emojis — a format the defence noted was similarly used for her mother’s contact.

When questioned on the nature of the relationship, the complainant denied sharing any close emotional bond with the individual despite the affectionate contact description. Ademola-Bello (SAN) argued that the digital evidence appeared inconsistent with her earlier testimony concerning her relationships and interactions during the period surrounding the alleged incident.

The defence also strengthened its case with documentary evidence relating to the complainant’s academic records. An official examination scoresheet, subpoenaed from the university management and presented through a university representative, Dr. Abubakar, was admitted in court after the complainant acknowledged it under oath as her authentic examination record for the course handled by the defendant.

Legal observers noted that the defence appeared methodical in challenging both the narrative and supporting context of the allegations, with the cross-examination focusing heavily on contradictions and factual clarity.

Following the conclusion of the defence’s engagement with the complainant, Justice Ogala adjourned the matter to June 24 and 29, 2026, for the prosecution to open its substantive case and call witnesses in an attempt to establish the criminal allegations against the embattled lecturer.
